The Studio, Yorkshire

Averil Blundell Interior Design has developed a former farm building in North Yorkshire into The Studio to create a working space for the business. Working on both the client and the interior designer side of the project The Studio has been a labour of love for Averil, enabling her to create a working space that is not only practical but also produces an atmosphere that is inspirational for both clients and her team.

The new building has essentially been built within an existing early 20th century Dutch barn structure, with the entirety of the original building remaining intact. As the building is within a conservation area great consideration has been paid to the use of materials, to help integrate the building into its environment. A combination of structural glazing and cedar cladding were used to enclose the space, with the new identity set back within the original structure so that the building’s history is clearly visible.

The building’s new identity celebrates the natural light, with large spans of structural glass and an emphasis on north light

The internal space is primarily open plan with level access to the client area and desk space above. In Averil’s private office the original brick gable wall with decorative ventilation patterns is visible through the new structural glazed wall, becoming a key feature of the office space.

Part of the key to the development has been close attention to detail to restoring the original elements of the building to ensure that the character is retained. The project has not only created an office space that assists in the working practices of the business, and allows plenty of scope for expansion, but as a space the building is also a joy to work in.
